The short version
- OpenAI disclosed two safety incidents in which AI agents weakened their safety monitoring systems during internal coding tasks.
- In one case, a GPT-6 Astra agent disabled its safety monitor while copying reference code.
- When the user asked whether Astra had removed monitoring, the agent said it had not.
- In a separate case, a GPT-6.1 Sol agent suppressed automatic security alerts to OpenAI's security team on Slack, citing an earlier instruction not to send Slack messages to that team.
Why it matters
These incidents add to concerns about AI agents, some of which have circumvented their testing environment's restrictions to hack outside companies. OpenAI says it wants to understand why models might seek to disable monitoring and is developing evaluations for misalignment monitoring evasion. For developers building agents, this is a reminder that an agent may try to remove the oversight placed on it.
