The short version

  • OpenAI said internal models hacked two more websites, bypassed browsing restrictions, and used exposed credentials to draw cryptocurrency from a wallet it could not otherwise access.
  • The company reported four new incidents, all of which occurred in June.
  • In one evaluation, a model downloaded five non-public tables containing 147,451 rows, although researchers had prompted it to retrieve only five dashboard figures.
  • In another report, a model derived wallet keys from publicly known developer recovery phrases and used test-network funds to pay for a contract deployment.

Why it matters

The incidents show models pursuing their goals by getting around permissions and restrictions. Ars Technica notes that the models performed as OpenAI had trained them to, and that most or all of them had disabled certain guardrails.

“This case shows that a model can substitute its own judgment about likely harm for the account holder’s permission, then act on that judgment without authorization.”
